In peacetime, the National Guard is commanded by the governor of each respective state or territory. Sarah Palin plays no role as the commander of the Alaska National Guard outside of the state. Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, on Sunday said he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they
involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations. Palin herself has stated she paid little attention to activities outside the state, including the
war, prior to 2007. The current Alaska National Guard General was appointed in 2003–more than three years before Palin took office.

On Sunday, John McCain himself touted Palin’s national security credentials by referring to her experience with the Alaska National Guard.
So the question becomes this: Was John McCain mis-informed by his campaign staff regarding Sarah Palin’s role?

The National Guard of the United States is a reserve military force comprised of state National Guard members or units under federally recognized active or inactive armed force service for the United States [1][2]. The National Guard of the United States is a joint reserve component of the United States Army and the United States Air Force and maintains two subcomponents: the Army National Guard of the United States [1] for the Army and the Air Force’s Air National Guard of the United States [1].

Established under Title 10 and Title 32 of the U.S. Code, state National Guard serves as part of the first-line defense for the United States.[3] The state National Guard is divided up into units stationed in each of the 50 states and U.S. territories and operates under their respective state governor or territorial government [4]. The National Guard may be called up for active duty by the state governors or territorial commanding generals to help respond to domestic emergencies and disasters, such as those caused by hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes.[4]

With the consent of state governors, members or units of state National Guard may be appointed to be federally recognized armed force members in active or inactive service [5][6][7]. If so recognized, they become part of the National Guard of the United States [1]. The National Guard of the United States units or members may be called up for federal active duty in times of Congressionally sanctioned war or national emergency [4]. State National Guard may also be called up for federal service, with the consent of state governors, to repel invasion, suppress rebellion, or execute federal laws if the United States or any its states or territories are invaded or is in danger of invasion by a foreign nation, or if there a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the federal government, or if the President is unable with the regular armed forces to execute the laws of the United States [8].

The National Guard of the United States is administratively headed by the National Guard Bureau which is a joint activity under the Department of Defense.[9][10][11] The National Guard Bureau also provides a communication channel for state National Guard to the Department of Defense.[12] The National Guard Bureau provides policies and requirements for training and funds for training for state Army National Guard and state Air National Guard,[13] the allocation of federal funds to the Army National Guard of the United States and the Air National Guard of the United States,[13] as well as other administrative responsibilities prescribed under 10 U.S.C. ยง 10503. The National Guard Bureau is headed by the Chief of the National Guard Bureau (CNGB) who is a four-star general[9][10] in the Army or Air Force.

When the McCain camp complained about the profressioanlism of this interview, I watched Wolf Blitzer’s and Campbell Brown’s reponse to it. They both missed the point (again) – as would be expected by such unneutral new reporters – the point was not the issue of the questions asked, but the terrible and “Snotty” attitude Campbell had. It was like watching a overtly angry wife obsessively verbally attack a humble husband. Her attitude was unprofessional, not the questions. This is exactly what President Bush meant in his speech when he referred to “the Angry Left” – well your living it “Baby”!!!!

I think it only fair that you show the entire interview, not just this excerpt about the National Guard. I happened to watch the whole thing last night. The reason McCain cancelled his interview with Larry King was not because of this issue of Palin’s experience. The reason so many are upset, myself included is that previous to this part of the interview, Campbell Brown said, something like, “What kind of mother knowingly subjects her 17 year old daughter to public media scrutinty,by taking on the role of a VP nominee?” I believe that the personal attack on Sarah Palin as to her judgement as a mother, is what the McCain camp finds inexcusable. NOT THE ATTACKS ON HER EXPERIENCE. I just watched you all discussing this after the RNC and you’re only showing this exchange, which is misleading America. If that is all I saw, I wouldn’t have thought Ms. Brown had done anything wrong. However, based on the entire interview, including the personal attacks on Gov. Palin, I say “Shame on you” You owe Sarah Palin and her family an apology. Inexcusable for a journalist with your experience!

If Tucker Bounds would have just answered the question, it wouldn’t have been an issue. The problem was that he didn’t seem to know the answer (or the answer was “there isn’t an example”) and thought he could get away with the Talking Points without being questioned. I thought Campbell Brown was courageous, genuine, and honest. As the interview was happening, I, too, wanted to hear the answer to her question. Tucker was asserting that Ms. Palin had military experience because as a governor she is over the Guard.

I don’t think anyone wants a situation in the media where spokesmen can be interviewed and say anything that they want without being seriously questioned.

    Go Campbell Brown!

John McCain is right on by cancelling his interview with Larry King. This only proves his ability to lead by not giving CNN the time of day. Watching Campbell Brown attack the McCain spokesperson was absolutely shocking to me! If CNN wants to portray themselves as a network that is fair to both sides, they would fire her for her lack of professionalism. Her anger was astounding. Her mannerisms reminded me of an immature teenager.

As a journalist who’s been given the runaround on more than one occasion, Campbell Brown was simply doing her job. Tucker Bounds was out of bounds because he either a. didn’t know the answer to the question or b. couldn’t answer the question because to do so would undercut a spurious argument. She did what the folks at Fox News do every night: keep asking until you get an answer. It’s what journalists are trained to do.

I saw the interview as it played live. Campbell was asking appropriate questions and Tucker Bounds began getting slightly hysterical, like a small child who’s been caught in the cookie jar and won’t fess up. Campbell’s justified disbelief came at Tucker’s unprofessional attempts to wriggle free of the questions, and divert away–it didn’t work, and when Campbell kept pressing he became more shrill.

Don’t blame Campbell for doing her job, Tucker basically peed himself on national TV. Perhaps if he had stronger source material to work from (like a truly qualified candidate) this would not have occurred.

Campbell Brown just won me over. She was awesome for not letting Tucker get away with the question. Go veg! Go green!
