Ciudad Juarez Violence: 14 People Killed in Mexico Murder Capital – Fourteen people were killed Sunday in Ciudad Juarez, a city near the United States border affected by the violence of drug cartels, officials in the state of Chihuahua (north) revealed.
A shooting in the city economic center killed three women and one man and injured five, authorities have said two men had been arrested.
Furthermore, an armed commando shot dead six people during a feast.
Finally, the lifeless bodies of four men were found, bearing signs of torture.
Clashes between members of organized crime are held throughout the state of Chihuahua, the largest in Mexico, including Ciudad Juarez (population 1.3 million), considered the most dangerous city in Mexico with more than 2 660 homicides in 2009 and 1860 since the beginning of the year.
Across the country, the war between drug cartels for control of trafficking and their clashes with the army killed approximately 28,000 people since the coming to power of President Felipe Calderon in December 2006.
The brutality of Sunday’s violence will surely reignite the debate around the need for more control of the American southern border. Both political parties are trying to seize the issue with the mid-terms elections approaching.
