JMU Riot Video:Springfest 2010 James Madison University Block Party – Riots can get out of control in an instant and when police need to crack down, they’re not going to take your actions lightly. It seems that close to 30 people were just arrested when a party which took place near James Madison University quickly turned into a full fledged riot. Over 8,000 people came outside near James Madison University and Saturday’s streets near the college turned into a hectic scene. The JMU riot caused the pursuit of officers and it seems in just a matter of a short few minutes over several dozen different partiers who took their good time to another level with the riot were soon arrested.
Police are reporting that the rioters got extremely carried away and threw bottles and trash at the police offers. They were led to use pepper spray and tear gas in order to subdue the rioting college students. About 30 people were arrested and many more were injured mainly by the amount of broken glass that was being thrown throughout the whole afternoon as well as the evening. Not to mention the excessive amount of bon-fires that were started during the event, the majority of them taking place in garbage cans.
If you’re wondering what might have started this full-scale riot, well the Harrisonburg police are saying that the JMU riot may not have even been started by the James Madison college students and that it’s believed that it’s more likely that the riot was started from people that are not natives to the town. The JMU students as well as out of town partier’s all gathered for Springfest which is a big 3 day party that is housed in an off campus area. It usually has around 4,000 people that attend but this year the numbers were close to double that amount. The party was promoted Facebook which may have led to the huge numbers.

Amazing…glad I went to college during the era I attended…funny we NEVER had any situations like this…I guess it makes you wonder what the definition of higher learning experience is….Schools need to concentrate more on what these kids are going to school for…
Law Enforcement 101 makes it clear that the community must enforce the laws. Police without community support can do nothing.
Despite the fact that locals would disagree, the community is a STUDENT community. The Harrisonburg Police lost the respect of the student community through a consistent pattern of rights violations and petty law enforcement over the years. Student non-cooperation and disrespect for law enforcement in Harrisonburg is to be expected.
A well publicized example of petty law enforcement was charging 2 JMU students with felonious “launching of a missile” for throwing a snowball at a police cruiser. The charge was absurd.
An example of the repetitive rights violations is the failure to provide a Miranda warning before coercing a confession of guilt from minors charged with “underage possession” of an alcoholic beverage. Harrisonburg Police Officers typically threaten to take the young person to jail unless they confess to the crime. Clearly, this supplies the measure of compulsion above and beyond that inherent in custody itself conceptualized in the Miranda opinion
Approximately one thousand JMU students are charged with violation of Virginia Code 4.1-305 each year. In every case the student’s Constitutional privilege against self-incrimination is violated. This is just one category of errant law enforcement. Harrisonburg derives millions of dollars in fines from the JMU student community every year. It has distinguished itself among all municipalities in the country for the percentage of minors so accused. Can there be any wonder that Harrisonburg Law Enforcement disrespected? In fact, it is the zeal for such enforcement that must be wondered At.
