Odetta Dies
Odetta Dies – Odetta,the artist who is famous for using her voice during the civil rights movement has passed away at the age of 77.Odetta Holmes was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 31, 1930 but was raised in California where she lived through various injustices.Odetta told The Times some years ago:
“We lived within walking distance of Marshall High School,but they didn’t let colored people go there, so we had to get on the bus and go to Belmont High School.”
Odetta called on her fellow blacks to “take pride in the history of the American Negro” and was active in the civil rights movement. And she also sang at the March on Washington in August 1963.
