Robert Byrd Hospitalized:West Virginia Senator Ill – West Virginian Senator Robert Byrd is in the hospital in serious condition. He is 92 years old and is the longest serving current member of congress. A spokesman for Byrd has only said that he is “seriously ill” and has been admitted to the hospital. He was taken to a hospital in the Washington area last week. At the time, doctor’s said that he was being admitted for a heat related illness.
“However, upon further examination by his doctors, other conditions have developed which has resulted in his condition being described as ‘serious,” the representative said in a statement.
He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1952. He stayed in the House of Representatives for six years before being elected to the U.S. Senate. Up until last year, he had served as the leader of the Appropriations Committee. He held a number of high-value positions throughout his career. It is not currently clear if he will be fit to return to duty at any time in the near future.
Byrd was formerly a member of the Ku Klux Klan, but has since reformed and actually became a huge component of the civil rights movement. He is known for being a heavy-handed supporter of the coal industry in his home state, and an advocate for change in the environmental and safety sectors.
Byrd has reportedly been in bad health for years. As of late, he has had to use a wheelchair to get from place to place. He was last in the hospital last September, after he was injured during a fall in his home.
