Similac Formula Recall 2010 – Similac Recall Lot NUMBERS

Dylan | September 22, 2010 | 424 Comments More

Similac Formula Recall 2010 – Similac Recall Lot NUMBERS – Earlier today Abbott Laboratories announced that they were recalling 5 million cans of certain Similac-brand powdered infant formula with the lot numbers 87932T20, 88117T26, 78208T2,88136T20,91433t20,800-986-8850,800-545-5216,800-515-7677,800-986-8800,847-937-6100,(847) 935-8865,(847)935-3456,66128RB6,61251 RB6,61347RB,84314 RB,85454 T2,86580 T20,88137T20 and 90372T20.

The voluntary recall is taking place because the company believes that their product may contain beetles.
Abbott spokeswoman’s Melissa Brotz said in a statement that after small insects were discovered in the cans of milk that are produced at a manufacturing facility in Sturgis, Michigan it was decided to recall several products.

Brotz went on to say that the company has decided to stop all production in the building where the bugs were found and that they are the ones who contacted the Food and Drug Administration to initiate the recall of 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans of Similac powder that were sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean- please be aware that Abbott liquid formula is not at all part of the recall.

The FDA revealed that the beetles found in the cans can could cause discomfort, irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, causing the infant to lose appetite if they are ingested.

You can visit www.similac.com/recall10 or call Abbott’s consumer hotline, (800) 986-8850, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for more information about the recall that may touch your baby or the baby you take care of.

I finally called 847)935-3456, and spoke to an abbott rep. my 3 containers were recalled the numbers are not listed above, they are:92663T20, 90314T20, 87940T20

      • Michelle Imhoff says:

Good afternoon,I am writing on behalf of my daughter who was just released from the hospital for abdominal cramping. We went in at 7pm and left at 6am the next morning. It was a night of pure heXX withs and iv, ultrascans, ultrasounds and it all comes down to formula, I believe. To top it off I didn’t hear about this until this evening. Needless to say I was very uncomfortble with the fact that I walked into Walmart to return my two cans of formula that were half empty and were tainted. Going to purchase new formula and sitting on the shelf was the formula that had been recalled at what i heard was announced at three oclock pm. No one there was taking the initiative to pull the formula from the shelf. I am disgusted at this situation. My baby has been sick for over a week. For anyone to have to go through this situation is ridiculous. A night again I will say of ivs, fluids and catheter on a baby is no fun and the fact that of all manufactuering plants, it has to be what we as parents trust baby formula. I am very upset with this announcement and hope that some type of quality inspection would of been done earlier and would be interested to see the quality inspections over the last year. Sincerely,Michelle Imhoff

      • cheri says:

    3. Chris says:

The recall includes ALL powered formula in plastic containers. Lot numbers above are for “cans” of formula

    4. Melanie says:

Lot # 91433t20 is also recalled. Finally got on website to check.

    5. nikki says:

Where is the lot number located on the cans?

    7. JaxboxChick says:

I had been feeding my baby recalled formula that I had just purchased at Publix 2 days ago. How horrible is that?

      • Tracie says:

I’m sorry, but I am contacting an attorney!!!!!!!!!

        • Danastarr2002 says:

Yes, i hear ya! Our babies food should be the most protected! This is horrible! I am so ANGRY!

        • Jessica says:

Im sorry my son has been sick for 3weeks,he is only a mth old..Come too find out the can I have been feeding him from was recalled.. All the can have been bought from the same store. 8. Sherry says:

There are MANY more recalled lot numbers than the ones listed above!

IMPORTANT READ THIS!!!! Here is the new website that WORKS!!! stage.similac.com/recall

Notice is says “stage” instead of “www”

After looking up your lot number, if it is recalled, click “consumer” and follow all directions to be reimbursed. KEEP THE PACKAGE because they will send you a mailer to mail it in to them.

Also, alternate numbers to call. The LAST one worked for me:

      800-986-8850
      800-545-5216
      800-515-7677
      800-986-8800
      847-937-6100

      (847) 935-8865

      (847)935-3456

      • ms_fortune says:

        Thank you for the information!

      • Rachel says:

the 3456 # is directly to Abbott and I am waiting for a call back.

      • leilani wilde says:

thank you for the phone numbers. I used the last one and was able to reach them. Thankfully my formula for my preemies were not recalled!

      • RK says:

thanks sherri for posting the telephone numbers. i was able to get through to the last number. all my 3 containers have been recalled

      • Martin says:

Thanks for the info, but the stage.similac.com/recall website is now just a “put in your username and password” page, no recall info available.

The main website is still not working, and their phone line just says “we are experiencing a high call volume…” gee ya think?

I’m glad they took the initiative to announce the recall, but at least have your IT people on hand to help out when millions of parents start calling. My son uses the powdered formula and last week he started getting more fussy. We assumed it was more due to teething than anything else, but we’ll see. All of our containers have lot numbers ending in “T20″.

Since we live in a hurricane zone we keep liquid formula on hand just in case anyway. At least we have a backup we can use on short notice.

      • ms_fortune says:

I tried using that site again and it led me to an Abbott page where you needed a user name and password. The 1.45 lb. container I bought has been recalled. The lot number for that is 88113T20. I wanted to check on the one I bought last week. #88139T20.

      • Granny says:

        Sherry,
Thank you for posting the phone numbers. I was able to get into the last number as well.

      • ashley says:

That website didn’t seem to work for me. It kept asking me for a username??

    9. Myra says:

My local safeway advised me to stop giving her similac formula until further notice

    10. Frank Monteleone says:

Just ro let some ppl know that SIMILAC ALIMENTUM is not being recalled , i just called up ….

    11. Shawnna says:

Our cans were not recalled, but i think they should be my son has been sick for over a week, waiting for them to call meback

      • johnathon mcclure says:

my son has also been sick for over a week now could this be due to faulty formula lot # 59578r36

      • Casi says:

My daughter is now going on 8 weeks tomarrow.. About 3 weeks ago she was acted like she was sick. She had all the symptoms that they are saying that is associated with this. I switched he rto the soy cuz I thought maybe she just couldnt take the similac advanced. Now I am 100% thinking that I gave her contaminated formula. I am still sitting on 4 cans of formula that walmart refused to exchange for me for the new kind.

    12. Tracie says:

I went to my local Walmart IMMEDIATELY to get Gerber good start for my 2 month old twins and to my surprise, walmarts shelves were FULLY stocked of all Similac and NO ONE that I mentioned the recall to had ANY idea about it!!!!!!!!!! They acted as if it were no big deal. I go through about 23 cans a month with my twins and Just last week I had to get them on reflux medicine. There is NO telling how long the bugs have gone unnoticed in the plant!!! This IS unacceptable!!!

    13. GUAM MUTHA! says:

So the world is really coming to this???
Beetles in our children’s formula? Perhaps I should pray to win the lottery and monopolize the world’s QUALITY ASSURANCE agencies to make sure stuff like this never goes wrong. We have enough to worry about and now, we have to be cautious of what we feed our infants…NOT TOO HAPPY SIMILAC!!!!!!

    14. michelle says:

I was trying for hours to get recall information and finally got threw. my similac is 2.12oz and is recalled numbers are 91488T20 and 91577T20 I was told all the T2 are recalled. I’m upset cause the similac that I have was bought the end of Aug its a month later and they finally said something. I was wondering why my baby went #2 like 6 times a day. That really upsets me.

    15. Tani says:

Okay I have 35 containers that are recalled out of my 50 that I have stocked seeing as we moved out of the USA and my daughter won’t take anything but the USA similac.

Here are what I found so far

These are all the 12.9 oz powdered cans

      66128RB6

      61251 RB6

      61347RB

      84314 RB

      These are 8oz powdered can

      85454 T2

      86580 T20

      The 1.45lb powdered containers (tubs)

      88137T20

When I finally got ahold of someone at Similac due to the fact I live out of the USA with all of this product and my DD won’t take the Canadian similac I was told that the lots with the RE in the lot numbers are not affected. But the ones with RB are affected.
I found they were pretty useless in helping me resolve the situation. I do know from looking at one in my recycle bin that my DD got one can of this crap

    16. Julie says:

i am so angry as well that there was such poor quality assurance. my daughter had diarrhea and fever for a few weeks. it happened during the week of the egg recall so i had her tested for salmonella…which was negative. i wonder if it was the similac. unfortunately, she finished the can and we threw away the empty can a couple of weeks ago!

      • Tricia Dudley says:

Julie, my daughter had the exact same thing happen, tons of diarrhea and feverduring the egg thing and we did the stool test and it came back negative!! We need to get Similac!! this is Rediculous!!!

      • Betty Clevenger says:

If we went back to carnation evaporated milk, two cans of water and karo syrup one teaspoon there would be no problems . I raised three children on this and they had no problems, never were obese, no attention problems being b+ students, having only childhood diseases such as measles. How many of you grew up with the natural feeding no powder and had none of these problems. We aren’t sure where the powder fomulas are made or mixed as we only get a stateside address for the company.

    17. Julie says:

tani, thanks for sharing your info

    18. Questionable.. says:

It is unfortunate that this happened, but some of you people are ridiculous. THIS is an accident. Similac is doing what it can to reverse this problem and do what is best for their customers. I am 100% POSITIVE that the people of Similac would never do anything willingly to hurt anyones infants. So you people contacting your lawyers and saying that this is ridiculous should calm down. I am sure accidents have happened to you, or are you perfect?

      • oneamazingmother says:

accidents do happen but it is a big deal to just have to switch your babys formula… the upset tummys and all it took trying 4 diff kinds to find one for my baby and now i have to change it and when i find one im not changing back to similac its too much change on her little tummy…

        • WhoSays says:

Don’t change the formula, just purchase the LIQUID version of the formula that you’re using. It works just as well. Yes it’s a little more expensive but does it $$ really matter when it comes to your babies bellies?

      • Romgrl says:

This is no ACCIDENT! Did the bugs ACCIDENTALLY found its way in the factory, if this was the case i question the cleanliness of the entire facility. i am not the type of mom that steams my baby’s bottle 2 million times but when the health of my child is in jeopardy due to this kind of ACCIDENT it makes me vcery upset. My son got sick, he normally drinks about 25 oz a day but that week he drank not even 10 oz for the entire 24 hour period. Similac needs to get their shit together!!!!

        • Lillysmama10 says:

Just use the generic brand. It has ALL the same stuff in it. Go to target and get the Target brand that is equivalent to the Similac that you are using. It’s the same and alot cheaper!!

        • Katy says:

Oh yes, I forgot. This is no accident. They INTENTIONALLY put bugs in your kid’s bottle. You are crazy.

      • ymf says:

I agree. People eat bugs all of the time. All of you posting that your child was sick… you realize this is most likely coincidence? One article I found was actually surprised that they would recall all of this formula over bugs, when restaurants in NYC are serving beetle soup! What is this world coming to? Abbott is a respected company, trying to do the right thing to make sure no one does get sick, and you’re all jumping up and down like they did it on purpose. I hope you realize that adult food is allowed to have a certain percentage of bugs, spiders, and mouse parts in it… It’s all organic. YUM

        • Curious says:

Exactly where I am going with my post. Did you notice all the people with sick babies that thought it was due to the egg epidemic only to discover that it wasn’t? Babies get sick. Babies don’t tolerate X formula or Y formula. Babies eat grass that millions of animals and bugs have urinated on. I’ve seen toddlers pick up ants off the ground and down them like Skittles and yet they survive. Gross but true.

      • daisy says:

        I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!

      • realistic mom says:

Seriously, I agree. Plus, if you people would do a little research instead of freaking out at the first word of this, you would have found that this was a VOLUNTARY recall because 1) there are no MAJOR health risks (some stomach irritation so they might not be as hungry) and 2)there was a POSSIBILITY that formula was contaminated. Abbott is being responsible by doing the right thing and taking them off the shelves even though they really didn’t need to. Babies get sick all the time, you have no idea if it was from the formula. I feed my son Similac every day, haven’t even found out if the containers I have are recalled yet. I’m giving him liquid for now to be safe, but I’m not freaking out about it. When you freak out over little things, you will teach your children to grow up and do the same. Do your homework and chill out.

      • mommyofone says:

Sorry Questionable but you must not have children. If you do and you don’t feel upset about bug parts and larvae being in their food then I feel bad for your children. It is rediculous. Clearly similac is NOT following a guideline somewhere to allow their product to be so contaminated

      • Jessica says:

When millions of cans of formula are affected….that is just negligence. A few beetles can go unnoticed, but how many beetles does it take to affect millions of cans?! This is an infestation….and I’m guessing they are saying beetles, but I really think they are roaches. This is unacceptable!!

        • Jessica says:

My baby girl has been sick for over a week. I am going to be sending in my pediatrician’s bill and possibly contacting my lawyer!

      • Mom of 3 says:

Just as ignorance is no excuse from the law, an accident when producing an unacceptable, and furthermore, harmful product that is ingested by infants, must also have a consequence that is more than a little slap on the hand. Given the fact that thousands of families are concerned for their babies health and well being right now, I find your post out of line and most insulting.

      • Are you kidding me? says:

Yes, everyone makes mistakes. But my mistakes don’t affect THOUSANDS of babies and families. This is absolutely unacceptable and it’s ridiculous for you to say “oh wow, they made a mistake, we all make mistakes”.

When you’re selling food (which for many babies is the ONLY thing they’re eating and eating it 8-10 times per DAY) mistakes are not acceptable, certainly not of this caliber.

      • concerned parent says:

Clearly you don’t have children that are getting sick because of this! So accident or not — intentional or not … doesn’t matter. Children are getting sick & it is ridiculous!

      • Jesse says:

Accident? There were bugs(cockroaches, im sure) running around the plant and laying eggs in the food that we give to our newborn!

And no one was walking around the plant to see this? It sounds like they discovered it after the fact in the containers.

Thats really really poor quality control, NONE basically.

    19. Viral B. Patel says:

My 1 year old daughter suddenly started to have Diarrhea since last two weeks. We also called our nurse to figure out what is going on..but we couldn’t figure out..she is still having it..suddenly I saw this in this news and it clicked me…
all of my similac cans are recalled..and I am pretty sure that’s what caused her this..
I am calling my lawyer. We are pure vegitarian..never had a piece of meat in life and they are feeding my daughter bugs…this is hurting my feelings religously..plus she is already hurt everyday going through this Diarrhea trouble and pain..she cries like crazy because of that..

now i know what was the cause…

    20. Jackie Teasdale says:

I am very upset. My daughter whose 3 1/2 months old has been sick for the past 3 weeks or so. Shes been having emesis, diarrhea, very gaggy and just not herself. I attributed this to her having a virus of some sort. I have been medicating my baby with motrin, tylenol, and mylicon drops to no avail… Im am so mad! How did this happen and why werent we informed sooner about our children ingesting bugs. I think this is definitely a class action lawsuit. Our poor babies should not have had to suffer for so long…. Someone at Abbott should be held responsible!

      • Norm says:

Our baby is just 2 months old and started having frequent diarrhea since we started the powdered formula last week. My wife is a wreck after hearing about this!!!
I will be contacting a lawyer ASAP!

    21. Tricia Dudley says:

I think it is really funny how they wont tell us what kind of bug was found… if it was in my childs formula I think I have the right to know what it was exactly!!

    22. LIN says:

IS there any sold in Canada?

    23. Hailee says:

I called after finding my formula recalled. They said take it to the store and they will issue u a refund or exchange if they would not than abbott would. mine infected were…
89246T21, 90374T20, 90398T20.. I would check ALL Online before even using them!

      • MICHELLE says:

I SEEM TO CAN,T FIND WHERE TO CHECK MY BAR CODE NUMBER CAN SOMEONE HELP ME THE NUMBER IS 911199V COULD SOMEONE CHECK THIS FOR ME PLEASE.

    24. Jackie Teasdale says:

      Dear questionable,
I am sure this was an accident but that doesnt mean someone should not be held responsible? When one accidently hits anothers vehicle, does personal damage to anothers property that are held accountable for what they did. Obviously you do not have a child affected or you would have discussed it. If this doesnt directly affect you, you should keep your comments to yourself. Us moms and dads do have a right to be upset about this.

      • Jennifer says:

yes we do my daughter has beed very fussy the last week or so and I was giving her the similac advance and the senstive gas and fussiness so I hope my can arnt recalled but she sure was acting like sh didnt feel good

    25. Azil says:

Is this what Abbot Lab. wants to tell consumers ’bout these products, “Special nutrients found in breastmilk”, and BUGS?

    26. Jennifer says:

Is the liquid similac recalled too??

    27. Jennifer says:

I will stop using the powder till futher notice

    28. Curious says:

While I do agree that it’s horrible that that bugs were found in the same plant where formula was produced, I’d be curious about how many of the sick babies mentioned here ACTUALLY ingested bugs? Be real now..

      • Tricia Dudley says:

I am not saying for sure that she did, but we have had this problem for about a month now and nothing in her diet has changed, she was tested for e.coli and things like that and the tests were all negative. my child was a pro pooper and now it has all changed in the last month, she has so much loose poopies that she is loosing weight!

      • Norm says:

What bother me is there is Larvae in these formulas. Meaning that these bugs are actually reproducing at the Similac plant. Imagine how long they have been around before ebing found!

      • Britney says:

I’m kind of curious as to how people could possibly think that (from what I’ve heard online) at least a few hundred babies’ parents have no idea what’s going on with them. My son has been sicker since we started that can, and if he gets better now that we’re on Enfamil, I’ll at least be fairly certain that he ACTUALLY ingested bugs.

      • realistic mom says:

thank you curious. did any of you try switching formulas to ease your child’s discomfort? anytime there are digestive issues, try switching to formulas for colic, soy based, or switching brands before you pump them full of tylenol and mylicon and accuse a “possible” contamination for your problems.

      • Mom of 3 says:

Good question. Here is a thought for you…

I have a baby who has dealt with various digestive issues for nearly three months. Due to constant constipation, we switched formula – from Similac Organic to Similac Sensitive for Fussiness and Gas. Well, that produced massive blowouts at every diaper change, so we then switched to Similac Soy, thinking maybe there was something more to the lactose intolerance. Now you tell me…is he lactose intolerant, does he have chronic constipation, or is he just fine but has been ingesting larvae that has caused all of this? See where I’m going with this?

      • Eddie says:

Beetles were found in the formula not just the plant.. that is straight from a Abbott Rep’s statment to the press

      • Cynthia says:

I agree. I’m glad that Abbott chose to notify and recall the formula voluntarily. Babies GET SICK. Everyone is just looking for someone to blame… I’m not sure if any of my formula was recalled, but I know I wish now I would’ve made breast feeding work!!

    29. Jennifer says:

My formula is recalled Lot# 89245T21 plastic container of similac advance

    30. Andrea says:

I just learned about the recall at 2:30 am, checked both containers (including one that is about 3/4 gone!) and found they were both recalled. Not happy that I had to run to the grocery store in the middle of the night (switching to Enfamil now!), but glad I heard about this before I fed him anymore of it. I wouldn’t have even known about this if it wasn’t for a friend’s link on facebook. They should have a better way of letting us moms know when something like this happens! My son has been spitting up horribly for a few days now, which he pretty much grew out of til now…and it started the day I opened that container!

My recalled containers (Similac Sensitive) are:
      90336T20
      88119T20

Best wishes to all moms out there dealing with this, and hopefully everyone’s babies are feeling ok!

    31. jackie gonzales says:

are the Similac products sold in the Philippines affected?

    32. KAHAMILTON says:

I purchased a moth suply at BJ WHolesale Club and just found out mine was recalled too. Lot 87002t20. Now it is the middle of the night and what do we do?

    33. Norm says:

      My 2 container numbers are:
      90376T20

I can not get thru phone or website at all and have been trying for over 6 hrs, i have similac sensitive soy.Does anyone know those numbers that are recalled?

    35. Betty says:

I feed my 3 month old son Similac also, luckily I have not found any of the recalled formula at home. But, that being said, I am very upset about this situation too. I expect the security to know that my child is not ingesting bugs in his formula! I do not let my 2 year old go around the house touching OR eating ” beetles”! Did no one notice bugs or larvae in the plant? Seriously?!

    36. maureen says:

      My recall number is 91479T20

    37. Britney says:

When people post lists of lot numbers, parents are likelier to not actually submit the lot numbers on their cans to the Similac site. This is a bad idea, because my son’s affected cans aren’t on that list. People with my lot numbers may have read this article and believed their Similac was not affected, leaving more babies sick for longer.
My lot numbers are 697857Y and 89239T20.

    39. Sarah says:

Thank you for posting some of the lot #’s affected. I can not get on their website (probably due to too much internet traffic on there) and I can’t get through on the phone either. Of course both of the containers of my son’t formula have been recalled. I think I am going to switch to Gerber goodstart….

    40. Mary says:

Our grandson has been having problems for the past 5 weeks and now it makes sense. Switching formulas and it was in the 11:00 pm when we found out and no stores open until the morning. Don’t live near big city to just run to!!

    41. Mrs,C says:

has abody heard of these numbers being recalled901139V00,891039V00

    42. Leslie says:

Still waiting on hold with Abbott b/c I can not get through online. My lot number is 90423T20. Is this one on the recall? Thank you for your help!

    43. Nichole says:

I have been trying to look up my cans for 3 HOURS. The server is overloaded and the 800 number says it has a high volume of calls and hangs up on you. This is unacceptable !!! I called Abbott public services dept and they said they would have to call me back as they did not have a recall list available to them. This would all be remedied if the released the plant manufacturing codes instead of having to look every can number. We have been using Similac since birth. So has my son been eating contaminated formula since then? What happened to the high standards we pay for when buying name brand formula?

    44. Saasha says:

      My 1 container numbers are:
      90376t20
      is it included recall

    45. Ryan says:

I just got through on one of the phone numbers listed above and I was advised that ALL plastic containers regardless of size have been recalled. I was advised to take them back to the store where you bought them. All liquid formula is save.

    46. Ryan says:

I was also advised that the phone numbers are not working because of call volume and the Web Site continues to crash because of bandwidth issues. Abbott really dropped the ball on this one.

    47. Vanessa says:

I called the 800 listed in the main article. I was directed to http://www.similac.com/recall. I got on with no problems. All of my lot #s have been recalled. I’ve purchased and put down over the months.

My Grandbaby is 23 days old today and we have been using the Similac. It has been 20 days of total misery. This poor baby hasn’t slept more than an hour at a time and spits up eveything. We knew he was in some kind of pain but couldn’t figure it out. We started with Enfamil but that didn’t seem to work so that is why we changed to Similac. We figured it will take some time to get it out of his system but he did actually sleep 3 hours straight before he got hungry. I am so angry that we all had to endure this.
