Target:MoveOn Boycott – Target Tom Emmer Donation

Target:MoveOn Boycott – Target Tom Emmer Donation – The huge chain store, Target, came under fire after they donated over $150,000 to Republican Tom Emmer in his campaign for governor. The donation was reportedly made because Emmer was planning on enacting a number of laws that would benefit the chain in their home state.
The news of the donation quickly made its way online, and was passed around the web via various social networks including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.
The company made the donation to the would-be Minnesotan politician specifically for television advertising funding. Their support of Emmer has garnered criticism for the company, because Emmer is known for having hard-line conservative views that do not waver.
He opposes same sex marriage and abortion, and support Arizona’s recent immigration bill that has caused a lot of controversy around the nation. It is easy to see why some left-wing fans of target would be upset to hear that they made such a lofty donation to a candidate that leans so far to the right.
As soon as the news broke, the Democratic political action organization MoveOn.org started to organize a boycott against the store, and even created a petition online asking target to “stop trying to buy elections.”
“The stakes are much higher than one candidate and one company,” MoveOn said in a statement. The organizations statement also went on to say that this is one example of a larger problem of corporations attempting to buy elections to better suit their business.
This is one of the things that Barack Obama promised that he would put a stop to when he took office. It appears that the problem may run much deeper than Barack Obama thinks.

Shame on Target Retail Stores! They should only donate to their communities and stay out of politics! My family and I are boycotting Target now. We used to go there for everything and just counting debit card purchases from 1/4/2010-7/26 we have spent $5437.08. You do the math for a whole year….too bad for Target.
They won’t miss you one bit. I imagine if Target gave to gay rights and baby killing it would be cool with you? Get a life all off you! Your a little emotional go figure lol
Howie, I happen to be pro choice, I am against the death penalty, and I believe that every human being is equal. Love is beautiful, people like you just keep fueling the hate..You call pro choice Americans murderers, but you think it is fine for a “Christian” rock band to sing about murdering a fellow human being just because he/she is gay or lesbian? Get your shit straight Howie, you are a right wing fundelmentalist zealot..You don’t love your God, you fear him/her/it..Stop telling people to get a life and get a life of your own….My husband and I will no longer shop at Target or any other business that caters to bigots, and haters.
Pat,
So let’s get this straight; you’re pro-choice but opposed to the death penalty? Basically you support the killing of innocent young children but oppose the killing of convicted murderers? Then you spew out hateful statements in an attempt to bash someone you accuse as being hateful? You are a seriously twisted person, not to mention a hypocrite.
Pro-chioce isn’t about killing young, innocent children. It’s the idea that a woman with unfortunate circumstances won’t be able to care for her child, or may not be emotionally capable because she was not a willing participant in the sex. Regardless of whether it’s legal or not, women will get abortions. Making it illegal will drive desperate women to “doctors” who will use rusted knives and coat hangers to kill the child and will most probably result in health complications for the mother as well. Children who are carried to term and then given up for adoption are often left in foster care, which usually makes a child extremely unhappy. Beyond that, if the mother has some form of cancer, or other disease, she has to live to carry the baby, but will seriously harm the child if she has certain medicines or treatments to maintain her life. Every circumstance is different, and politics should be kept out of abortion issues entirely. Sometimes, it is not right. Sometimes, it is.
The death penalty, although something that technically makes sense, financially starves the country. If on death row, a convict is AUTOMATIC to appeal to courts, and as most people convicted of murder tend to have less money, the state ends up paying for the lawyers and the entire legal process. Yes, taking care of an inmate for life may be expensive, but setting them on death row costs more.
On the gay issue, people are people. Let them be. Considering it doesn’t concern anyone, and is something only shared in private, why does anyone care? Being married doesn’t mean husband, wife, kids; it means family. The start to a family is two people who love eachother. Whether that be two men, two women, a man and a woman, or a group of friends who support you, it’s no one’s business but your own. “Normal” couples don’t flaunt that they’re married and show off in obscene public displays of affection, and when they do, they upset people just as much as gays and lesbians. If you think that stopping them from being legally bound together will stop anyone, you’re insane.
This country is turning to shit. Democrat or Republic, everyone is conservative. There is no counter-balance. A good number of the people I know plan on living outside of the country when they have enough money, and I have friends from all over the political spectrum. America is losing all of its respect.
I support Target and Chikfilet andthough I did not patronize their business before ready these reports I will start spending as much money as possible there and also encourage my friends and family to do the same. Thank yu for bringing their patriotism to our attention.Rusti!
I’ve always preferred Target over Walmart & KMart. I’m done with shopping at Target. I won’t be going there except for maybe a protest. They need a serious about-face before I change back to supporting them.
Great plus stay in China based Walmart!!! Please I beg all you go to WalMart!
They love you and said you can make out in the isles. Go to Walmart Go to Walmart
Who is this Howie? He sounds a little retarded !!!! Must come from the in breeding. You know he must be a middle age man with no life white of course and only his hand for a lover. Hey Dumb A– China ownes most of the U.S. already what is your point? To hell with Target they are not that great any way. What the hell kind of name is Rustina maybe the lover Howie needs? People that are far left or right are simple !!!!!! Have a great day Howie and Rustina. Still laughing over the name Rustina what a joke
It’s perfectly legal for companies to donate to whoever they want. GET OVER IT.
And perfectly legal for me to shop, or not shop where I want because a business made a bone headed decision.
Target – Please clarify your ethics statement if you continue to choose to support homophobic or other types of bigoted candidates so that your customers will know about it …Please add the following for clarification of your corporate identity…
“Target doesn’t allow discrimination in any form. However, Target will lend significant financial support to those who do, whether they are racists or some other type of bigot, simply because they call themselves ‘pro-business.’ Target will not take responsibility for our actions in any concrete manner and will use awards given to us for simply not persecuting or LBGT staff members as ‘proof’ that we really are good folks after all… (so please keep spending your money here so we can keep supporting America’s own special homegrown Taliban… the ultra-right religious fundamentalists.”
Kathleen M. Lake, M.A.
Get a life Katy and please shop at Walmart! Please!
My$ -> Target$ -> Emmer$ -> “You Can Run”$ (organization that advocates the execution of homosexuals) Which means when I spent money at Target, they gave it to a guy who donates to a murderous/fascist homegrown American taliban. Take out the middle man and I am funding hate every time I shop at Target (or BestBuy and others). Emmer says that “it was just a dinner table…” Would any sane person buy a dinner table for a terrorist organization so that they can have a nice meal before they murder American citizens? It’s just that simple. Don’t fund hate.
Only hate I hear is you! You hate that you can’t push your liberal ways on everyone so you yell and you hate. Please shop Walmart I’m sure they will welcome you with arms wide and a free Melissa Etheridge
I’m an overbearing beach 2 free CD
Please shop Walmart!!
It’s not just the left and gay people who are boycotting Target. I am a veteran (in fact, every person in my family including my dear mother also served with distinction). I am a life-long devout Christian, a senior citizen, I “bare arms,” I am affluent and well-educated. Am I a “leftie?” What exactly is the litmus test? Did my bronze star honoree father (buried at Arlington) sacrifice his life only for straight Americans (He was fine with gay people)? Did I and my brother volunteer for military service to a country only for the norm (we sacrificed for EVERY American)? My mom was an RAF decoder during WWII … did she give up the country of her birth to adopt a precious country where only heterosexuals have rights (I think not… she accepted, even treasured her gay friends)? My patriot family supports the right of gay Americans to equal protection under the law for themselves and their families. I will not use my sizeable discretionary income to fund hate mongers. I will not purchase anything from any corporation that does.
KM Lake…I am not a Christian, I am an agnostic, but if I was Christian, I would want to be like you. Not many Christians now a days believe in uncondional love, but I believe you are there..Thank you for speaking up!
Not true. Just because someone is a Christian doesn’t mean they are Republican, a redneck, or stupid. I am educated. I consider myself a moderate liberal. I’m pro choice, pro civil union, and pro death penalty. I believe taking and giving life is in the hands of God and should not be left up to the state. Then again, who am I to judge what other people do? It’s not up to me.
I am not anti gay or homophobic in any way, shape, or fashion. I don’t think anybody should be denied rights because of what they believe whether I agree personally or not. Now, if Target gave that same amount of money to a pro gay rights candidate or lobbying group and Republicans protested, the same people complaining would be rejoicing rather than saying “Target need not buy elections.” I believe in the freedom to believe whatever one chooses, religious or otherwise. It’s what the founders fought for: the right to believe in whatever you want whether it’s extreme leftism or Satanism. It’s not like a state university gave them the money. Its a private organization. Maybe the donation had nothing to do with his belief on that one issue. There are others, you know.
Believeing marriage should be between a man and a woman is a personal choice (note that President Obama supports civil unions but not revision of the meaning of marriage). Everyone has the right to form their own opinion on that issue or any other and should not be persecuted for it. Now violence is violence and is wrong whether it is a hate crime or not. Unity does not mean uniformity. I unapologetically believe in the Bible. That doesn’t make me closed minded, extremist, or hateful. I’m a Biology student. I learn about things that go against what I believe all the time. Would you get mad at a Muslim because they didn’t want to eat chicken cordon bleu? Okay then, nobody should be persecuted for what they believe in whether you agree or not.
Mr. Lake I truly appreciate family’s sacrifice for the country but I am surprised that you would correlate their service to gay rights because gay rights were not even an issue when they were serving. I would have found it more noble of you to say that they were fighting for the rights of people who can’t control their skin color and were persecuted for it.
I’m sure your father didn’t give his life for straight Americans because there was not such a sensationalization of homosexuality as there has been in the last decade. Also, there is no hate or homophobia because a person doesn’t agree with a sexual preference. It’s a matter of opinion. This is an issue that I hope goes away soon because it is pointless.
It seems that homosexuals are showing a lot of H8 and vengance to people that donate to causes they believe in.
My question is how do we grow this boycott? Is the DFL or Mark Dayton promoting this boycott? If not, why not?
Will continue to support Target for supporting their candidate! Morality is a choice not a dictatorial right as some groups would like! Special interest groups do not need special laws to support or justify their existence!
What makes the glbt community a special interest group? And what makes you think that based on some part of you, you couldn’t be lumped into one?
God does not make mistakes, God created me the to be exactly who I am. Thank you for making me Gay!!
I can not shop at Walmart because they are non union and do not even pay a living wage with benefits. Now i can not shop at target because they should be accountable for their contributions. I do not like Kmart really but they have a great standing with human rights issues and should be the GO to place for shopping if you care about who gets your money and how they spend it. if i have to buy non union then it will be at Kmart.Thank god for freedom of chioce
Hadn’t heard about this, makes me sad. I loved shopping at Target, boo
So Target donates $150 grand to a candidate in a perfectly legal way. So what? I don’t see a “problem” here. Those who morally object should donate to their own preferred candidate. Problem solved.
By the way, there are reasonable arguments against legalizing gay marriage, none of which are rooted in “bigotry.” Take that, emotionally-charged moral policemen of the hard Left.
