Tin Pan Alley For Sale:Manhattan’s Tin Pan Alley On Sale – Tin Pan Alley the so called “birthplace of American song” is up for sale.Manhattan’s historic Tin Pan Alley is also known as the home of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and other great American songwriters.It was revealed this week,that five buildings on West 28th Street in Manhattan’s Chelsea district are on sale as a group for $44 million.Experts say that the buildings should be destroyed and replaced by something else.Historic Districts Council Executive Director Simeon Bankoff,is not happy about that idea and stated:
“These buildings are incredibly significant to the development of New York City. They helped launch the careers of songwriters and musicians who are still popular today.”
Tin Pan Alley was full of music publishers and songwriters,from the 1890s to the 1950s.
